Fast broadband does not automatically mean good WiFi.
You can have full fibre arriving at your router and still have WiFi that will not reach upstairs, keeps dropping out in the back bedroom, disappears in the garden or becomes unusable in a garden office.
The reason is simple: your broadband connection and your WiFi network are two different parts of the system.
Your broadband provider gets the internet to your property. Your internal network then has to get that connection reliably to the rooms, buildings and outdoor areas where you actually need it.

There is no single WiFi product that fixes every property. The correct solution depends on where the network is failing and why.
How Can I Get Reliable WiFi in My Garden, Garden Office, Garage or Outbuilding?
Short answer: do not automatically try to make your household router transmit further.
For a garden office, detached garage, workshop, annexe, summerhouse or other outbuilding, the better solution is often to get a reliable network connection to that location first, and then provide WiFi inside it.
Depending on the site, that can be done using Ethernet, fibre, a dedicated wireless bridge or an outdoor access point

Wireless bridges are not limited to the sort of distances normally found between a house and a garden office.
Wire Wizards installed a Ubiquiti wireless bridge spanning approximately 0.8 miles across Littlehampton Harbour, creating a dedicated network connection between two locations rather than trying to stretch ordinary indoor WiFi across the distance.
For a garden office or detached building, the distance is usually much shorter, but the principle is the same: get a proper network link to the building first, then provide WiFi where it is actually needed.
Why Doesn’t My WiFi Reach Upstairs, the Back Bedrooms or Through Thick Walls?
Short answer: one broadband router is often being expected to provide coverage across far more building than it realistically can.
This becomes especially noticeable in larger houses, older properties, extensions, loft conversions and buildings with substantial internal walls and floors.
Why is WiFi good downstairs and poor upstairs?
WiFi is a radio signal, and every wall, ceiling and floor between your device and the access point weakens that signal to some degree.
That is why a property can have excellent WiFi beside the router downstairs, reasonable coverage in the hallway, poor performance in an upstairs bedroom and virtually no usable signal in a room at the opposite end of the house.
The construction of the building matters too. Solid brick walls, dense internal walls, reinforced materials, insulation, extensions and multiple floors can all make it harder for the signal to travel through the property.
Different WiFi frequencies also behave differently. Higher-frequency bands can provide very high speeds, but they generally do not travel through solid obstacles as well as lower-frequency bands. This means a device may show excellent performance close to an access point but lose speed quickly once several walls or floors are in the way.
This is why simply increasing your broadband package from 100Mbps to 500Mbps or 900Mbps does not automatically improve coverage upstairs.
The broadband may be arriving at the router perfectly well. The problem is getting that connection from the router to the device.
For larger or more difficult properties, the solution is often to bring the WiFi closer to the rooms where it is actually needed rather than expecting one router to cover the entire building.Use the section from the article draft.
Why doesn’t buying a more powerful router always solve it?
A more expensive or newer router can improve performance in some situations, but it cannot remove the walls, floors and distance between the router and your devices.
WiFi communication also works in both directions.
The access point has to send data to your phone, laptop or television, but that device also has to send data back to the access point.
So even if a router can transmit a strong signal a long distance, the small radio inside your phone or laptop still has to communicate back successfully.
That is why WiFi is not simply a case of buying the router with the biggest claimed coverage area or the highest number printed on the box.
A well-designed WiFi network focuses on:
where people actually use their devices;
how many walls and floors the signal has to pass through;
where access points can be positioned;
how those access points connect back to the network;
and whether several access points are needed to provide consistent coverage.
In many properties, several correctly positioned access points will provide a much better result than one extremely expensive router sitting in the corner of the house.
That is the difference between replacing equipment and actually designing the WiFi network.
Hard-wired access points
For larger houses and buildings with difficult WiFi coverage, one of the solutions we often prefer is to install multiple access points connected back to the network by Ethernet cabling.
This is known as wired backhaul.
Instead of an additional WiFi unit having to receive its own connection wirelessly from another router or mesh node, the network connection travels over cable directly to the access point.
The access point can then concentrate on doing its main job: providing WiFi to the phones, laptops, televisions and other wireless devices around it.
This can provide several advantages over simply adding wireless boosters around a property.
A hard-wired access point can be positioned where coverage is genuinely required rather than where it happens to receive enough signal from another WiFi device.
For example, a larger property might have one access point serving the ground floor, another covering the first floor and another positioned toward an extension or other difficult area.
They can all form part of the same network, so users are not expected to manually connect to a completely different WiFi system every time they move around the property.
The number and position of access points should be based on the building rather than a fixed formula.
A modern open-plan house may need relatively few access points, while an older Sussex property with solid walls, multiple extensions or several floors may require a completely different design.
The goal is not to install as many access points as possible. It is to install the right number, in the right places, with a reliable connection back to the network.

A care-home installation shows this problem particularly well because WiFi has to work across multiple rooms and areas, not simply beside one router.

The key lesson is this: the solution is not just “a stronger WiFi box”. Access points need to be positioned properly around the building so users and devices can connect where they are actually being used.
That same principle applies to larger Sussex homes.
I Have Fast Full-Fibre Broadband — Why Is My WiFi Still Slow?
Short answer: because broadband speed and WiFi performance are not the same thing.
You can have an extremely fast full-fibre connection arriving at your router while the wireless connection between the router and your phone, laptop, TV or other device is poor.
That distinction is one of the first things that should be established before replacing equipment or paying for an even faster broadband package.
Think of it as two separate connections
The easiest way to understand the problem is to split your connection into two parts.
Part one is the broadband connection coming into your property.
This is the internet service supplied by your broadband provider and delivered to your router or network equipment.
Part two is the connection between your network and the device you are actually using.
That second connection could be Ethernet or WiFi.
So you might have 500Mbps, 900Mbps or even faster broadband arriving at the router, but if your laptop is connected through a weak WiFi signal several rooms away, the speed you experience can be much lower.
That means upgrading the broadband package will not necessarily solve poor WiFi coverage.
If the internet connection is fast at the router but slow in one particular room, the problem is more likely to be inside the property rather than with the fibre connection itself.
How should slow WiFi be tested?
A single speed test does not tell the whole story.
We would normally compare performance in several locations and, where possible, compare a wired connection with WiFi.
For example:
Test the connection close to the router or main network equipment.
Then test the same device in the room where the problem occurs.
If possible, test a device using Ethernet so you can compare the incoming broadband performance with the wireless performance.
It is also useful to check whether the problem affects one device or several devices.
If every device is slow everywhere, the broadband connection or main network equipment may need investigating.
If performance is good near the router but poor upstairs or in the back of the house, that points much more strongly towards WiFi coverage.
If only one phone or laptop is affected, the device itself may also be part of the problem.
The important thing is to identify where the speed is being lost before buying more equipment.
Real installation testing matters
This is why we use real-world testing rather than judging WiFi purely by the number of bars shown on a phone.
A usable wireless network depends on signal quality, interference, channel conditions, client-device capability and how the access point connects back to the rest of the network.
The aim is not simply to achieve one impressive speed test beside the router.
The aim is to provide reliable, usable performance in the places where people actually need the connection.

Why Does My WiFi Keep Dropping Out?
Short answer: first establish whether the broadband is dropping out or the WiFi is dropping out.
To someone trying to watch a film, use a card machine or join a Teams call, the symptoms can look almost identical.
Technically, however, they can be completely different problems and require completely different fixes.
Is the internet failing or is the wireless connection failing?
This is one of the first things we would try to establish.
If every wired and wireless device in the property loses internet at the same time, the problem may be with the broadband service, router, gateway or other upstream equipment.
If a computer connected by Ethernet continues working while phones and laptops on WiFi lose their connection, the wireless network deserves much closer investigation.
Location can also tell us a lot.
If WiFi repeatedly drops in one bedroom but works properly downstairs, weak coverage is a possible cause.
If the problem happens while somebody walks from one part of the building to another, roaming between access points may need investigating.
If problems occur mainly when lots of people are using the network, capacity or congestion may also be involved.
Simply saying “the internet keeps going off” does not tell us which part of the system is actually failing.
Finding that out is the important first step.
Common WiFi dropout causes
Weak WiFi signal is only one possible cause.
Dropouts can also be caused by:
poor access-point positioning;
radio interference;
congested WiFi channels;
unsuitable wireless backhaul;
badly positioned mesh units;
devices holding onto a distant access point;
overloaded or unsuitable network equipment;
an actual broadband connection fault.
This is why randomly replacing the router does not always fix the problem.
A new router might temporarily appear to help while the underlying coverage or network-design problem remains.
A properly diagnosed network should identify whether the failure is happening at the broadband connection, the network equipment, the access point or the wireless device itself.

Large outdoor premises demonstrate why WiFi design is about more than installing one router.
At this recreation ground in West Sussex, the requirement was to provide usable connectivity across a much larger site and outdoor area.
Access-point positioning, network design and the way the equipment connects back to the rest of the network all form part of the solution.

The important point is that the equipment running the network and the equipment providing WiFi coverage perform different jobs.
Putting a more expensive router inside a building does not automatically provide reliable wireless coverage across an entire outdoor site.
The network has to be designed around where the users and devices actually are.
I’ve Tried WiFi Boosters, Extenders or Mesh and It Still Doesn’t Work — What Actually Fixes Bad WiFi?
Short answer: possibly not another booster.
Before adding more wireless equipment, establish how that device will get a reliable connection back to the network.
That connection is usually called the backhaul, and it is one of the most important parts of the system.
What does a WiFi extender actually do?
A traditional WiFi extender receives an existing wireless signal and rebroadcasts it.
For a small, simple dead spot, that can sometimes be enough.
The problem is that the extender itself still needs a decent connection to the original WiFi network.
If you install it in a location where the existing signal is already extremely weak, the extender has very little useful signal to work with.
It may show another WiFi network or make the signal icon look stronger, but the connection behind that signal can still be slow or unreliable.
This is why simply placing an extender in the room where WiFi is already failing is not always the answer.
The extender needs a good connection back to the original network first.
Is mesh better?
Mesh WiFi can be an excellent solution in the right property, but the word “mesh” does not remove the physical limitations of wireless networking.
Mesh units still need to communicate with the rest of the network.
If that communication happens wirelessly, the quality of the connection between the mesh nodes matters.
Putting a mesh unit behind several thick walls where the original WiFi signal is already poor can still produce disappointing results.
The system may work better when the mesh units have a strong wireless connection to each other, or where suitable cabling is available, when the units can use wired backhaul.
So the question is not simply:
“Is mesh good?”
The better question is:
“Will the mesh units have a reliable connection to each other in this particular property?”
Hard-wired access points
Where suitable cabling is possible, hard-wired access points are often the architecture we prefer for larger or more demanding WiFi installations.
Ethernet or fibre carries the network connection to the access point.
The access point then provides WiFi locally to the phones, laptops, televisions and other wireless devices around it.
That means the access point does not have to rely on another weak WiFi signal for its own connection back to the network.
For example, a larger property might have one access point covering the ground floor, another upstairs and another toward an extension.
They can all form part of the same network.
The objective is not to install as many access points as possible.
It is to install the right number, in the right positions, with a reliable connection back to the network.
The question we would rather answer
Instead of asking:
“Which WiFi booster should I buy?”
ask:
“What is preventing a reliable network connection from reaching this location?”
Once that has been established, the equipment choice becomes much easier.
In one property the answer might genuinely be a mesh system.
In another it might be a hard-wired access point.
For a garden office it could be fibre, Ethernet or a dedicated wireless bridge.
Solve the network problem first. Choose the product second.

Frequently Asked Questions About WiFi Problems in Sussex
Can WiFi reach a garden office?
Yes.
The best way to do it depends on the distance from the main property, what is between the two buildings and how important the connection is.
A nearby garden office might be served by Ethernet, fibre, a dedicated wireless bridge or another properly designed network connection.
Once the network reaches the garden office, an access point can provide normal WiFi inside it.
The important point is not to assume that the router inside the house should provide the entire connection by itself.
Can I get WiFi in a detached garage?
Yes.
If your normal house WiFi does not reliably reach the garage, a wired or wireless network link can be installed between the main property and the garage.
A separate access point can then provide WiFi inside the garage.
The best method depends on the distance, available cable routes, construction of the building and whether there is suitable line of sight for a wireless bridge.
Why does my WiFi work downstairs but not upstairs?
Walls, ceilings, floors and distance weaken the radio connection between your device and the router or access point.
A single router downstairs may provide excellent coverage nearby but struggle to reach bedrooms through several floors or substantial walls.
The solution may be to install another properly positioned access point upstairs rather than trying to make the downstairs router transmit further.
Will faster fibre broadband improve WiFi coverage?
No.
Faster fibre broadband increases the amount of internet capacity arriving at the property.
It does not automatically make the WiFi signal travel further through walls, floors or into outside buildings.
You can have extremely fast fibre at the router and still have very poor WiFi in another part of the property.
Is mesh WiFi better than a booster?
It can be, but not in every property.
A mesh system normally offers more sophisticated coverage than a simple extender, but the mesh units still need a reliable connection to each other.
If the wireless connection between the mesh units is poor, performance can still suffer.
Where possible, wired backhaul can provide a much more dependable connection between access points.
Is Ethernet better than WiFi?
For devices that do not need to move, Ethernet is usually an extremely reliable way to connect them.
It avoids the wireless radio link altogether.
WiFi is still essential for phones, tablets, laptops and other mobile equipment, so good network installations often use Ethernet and WiFi together rather than treating them as competing technologies.
Is fibre better than Ethernet between two buildings?
Fibre can have important advantages when linking separate buildings because the network data travels optically rather than through a conductive copper data cable.
It is also suitable for longer distances.
That does not mean fibre is automatically required for every outbuilding.
The right choice depends on the distance, existing cable routes, network requirements and how the buildings are being connected.
Will WiFi 7 fix dead zones?
Not by itself.
WiFi 7 can provide major improvements in wireless capability when supported by the network and client devices, but it cannot remove walls, floors, distance or poor access-point positioning.
A badly positioned WiFi 7 access point can still give poor coverage.
The technology matters, but where and how it is installed matters too.
How many WiFi access points does a house need?
There is no reliable answer based purely on floor area.
A modern open-plan property may need relatively few access points.
An older building with substantial walls, several floors, extensions or difficult construction may need a completely different design.
The correct number depends on the building layout, construction, where WiFi is required and how the access points will be connected back to the network.
Can WiFi be professionally installed without cables showing everywhere?
Often, yes.
Depending on the property, network cables may be routed through lofts, cupboards, voids, existing ducts or discreet external routes.
The available options depend on the construction of the building.
Cable routing should therefore be considered as part of the network design rather than simply attaching cables wherever they are easiest to run.
