A RJ45 connector is terminated to (connected to) a cat5 network cable.
Today I'm going to upload a video with this blog of Cat5e wiring being prepared and then slotted into an RJ45 connector.

The Cat5e Wiring as you should have it going into the RJ45 connector
All of the following cables; ethernet cabling, Cat5 ethernet cabling, Cat5 cabling, category 6 and outdoor Cat 6. are used to link your devices, such as computers, routers, telephones, printers, and access points.
The big difference between Cat5 and Cat6 is the amount of data that can be sent. Cat6 has a higher bandwidth.
I've written blogs before about Cat5e and Cat 6 and their uses and differences, so I'm not going to go crazy into that today because that's not the point of this one.
